The Total PACKage
TPACK (Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge) is a “framework that identifies the knowledge teachers need to teach effectively with technology”, as stated by Matthew Koehler (2011). TPACK does not mean using a specific technology made for education, but rather repurposing a tool that can be used for learning. In this project, students will create a newspaper using easelly, a site that allows users to create infographics. While easelly was not designed strictly for educational purposes, the website will allow students to create a visual representation collaboratively based on the research they conducted. Since students will not have prior experiences with easelly, it will be important to allow students time to play so they can learn and explore the different features of the website before beginning to develop their newspapers.
Technology, pedagogy and content come together in this project because students will be using Chromebooks to conduct research about news topics that they want to include in their newspapers. The Common Core State Standards require students to be able to find relevant information from both print and digital sources. It is my responsibility to provide the strategies to students so they can be successful with this task. Because students are more familiar with finding information from print sources, the learning will start there and progress to digital sources as students become more confident and successful in conducting research.
